Murkowski fails to place Alaska first and votes NO on icebreaker funding

Sen. Murkowski placed party before Alaska again and voted against funding that would “accelerate” the completion of a Coast Guard icebreaker

ANCHORAGE:  APRN reports that Murkowski voted against a defense appropriation that would have put $940 million dollars towards a Coast Guard icebreaker.

The NO vote comes as a surprise since Murkowski has normally been a very vocal proponent of icebreakers. So much so that she’s previously questioned the need to refurbish old icebreakers saying, “I question the value of investing scarce federal resources to refurbish her when what the U.S. needs is modern technology and capabilities.”

Less than a month ago, Murkowski introduced legislation called the Icebreaker Recapitalization Act. Unalaska community radio KCUB shared a press release from Murkowski that called funding for an icebreaker a “down payment on an Arctic future.”

However, when funding was actually on the table, Murkowski shied away from breaking with her Republican colleagues and voted NO.

“Murkowski talks a lot about getting icebreakers for the Arctic, but when the money was actually on the table she was unable to break away from her party and do right by Alaska,” said Mike Wenstrup chair of the Alaska Democratic Party.
