Love Wins as the Supreme Court Extends Marriage Equality Nationwide
A long and winding movement for marriage equality was finally awarded an overdue victory.
ANCHORAGE: Today the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the right to marry extends to all citizens, regardless of who they love. In the Majority's opinion, Justice Kennedy wrote,
"It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”
“Today’s decision is historic and to the countless advocates who have sacrificed so much over decades for marriage equality, we thank you," said Mike Wenstrup, chair of the Alaska Democratic Party. "This is a major step forward towards equality for all of our nation’s citizens.”
